Jungyeon Roh - A Contemporary Interpretation of 'Hyewonjeonshincheop'

In 2023, I obtained my doctoral degree from the Department of Design at Seoul National University. My research, titled 'A Study of Illustrations on the Modern Transformation of Genre Paintings: Focusing on Shin Yun-bok's Hyewonjeonshincheop,' delved into the enigmatic works of Shin Yun-bok, a pivotal figure in the flourishing of late Joseon-era genre paintings. I meticulously selected 15 pieces from his national treasure No. 135, 'Hyewonjeonshincheop,' and reinterpreted them through a contemporary lens.

My artworks were meticulously crafted using a handmade, limited-edition silk-screen technique. They were presented alongside a cruciform artist bookcase, adding an extra layer of aesthetic allure to the exhibition

An Evening by the Lotus Pond

돌담으로 쌓아올린 연못이 있는 고급 저택이나 기

방의 후원에서 정장을 차려입은 당상관 이상의 고

급 관료들이 기생들과 유희를 벌이는 모습이다.

This depicts a scene where high-ranking officials, dressed in formal attire, along with guests beyond the rank of local officials, gather in the gardens of a luxurious mansion or a noble's residence with a stone-paved pond. They engage in leisure activities and entertainment with courtesans and companions.

A Romantic Cottage with Water Lilies

현대의 양반이라 할 수 있는 고위 공직자들이 수

영장을 갖춘 호화 펜션에서 젊은 여성들과 유희를

즐기는 모습이다.

This portrays a scene where modern high-ranking officials, comparable to the aristocracy of the past, are seen enjoying leisure and entertainment with young women at a luxurious pension equipped with a swimming pool.

B. <연소답청>(年少踏靑)

Amorous youths on picnic

진달래 꽃 피는 봄에 보라색과 옥색의 배자에 향낭까지 찬 온갖 멋을 부린 귀문 자제들이 기생들과말을 타는 장면이다. 여성이자 천민인 기생에게 말을 내어주고 자신은 말구종을 마다않는 모습은 파격적이다.

In the spring when azaleas bloom, there is a scene of young aristocrats, adorned in various splendors, riding horses with courtesans. The striking sight of these women, who are both females and commoners, receiving horses while the nobles themselves walk on foot is quite dramatic.

Youngsters Enjoying Cherry Blossoms

벚꽃과 진달래가 만연한 산 중턱에 멋쟁이 젊은이들이 외제차를 갓길에 세워놓고 봄놀이를 즐기고있다. 현대의 젊은이들은 말 대신 자동차, 자전거,킥보드, 롱 보드를 타며 여가를 즐긴다.

In the middle of a mountain covered with cherry blossoms and azaleas, stylish young people have parked high-end foreign cars by the roadside and are enjoying spring outings. In modern times, young individuals often enjoy their leisure time by riding automobiles, bicycles, kick scooters, or longboards instead of horses.

C. <주유청강>(舟遊淸江)

A Barge Scene on the River

조선 시대 양반들이 서울의 강에서 기생들을 불러선유놀이를 즐기는 장면으로 가운데 흰 띠를 두른상중인 양반은 양반사회의 모순을 대변한다.

The original painting depicts three noblemen and three courtesans enjoying a boat outing by the Han River in Seoul during the Joseon Dynasty. They are accompanied by a musician playing the flute while rowing the boat. The noteworthy element is the indifferent expression of the central nobleman and the white sash he wears. This white sash symbolizes mourning attire, indicating a funeral, and Shin Yun-bok cleverly satirizes the contradiction of a nobleman engaging in a boat outing even during a funeral procession, within the painting's composition.

Han River Cruise Excursion

한강 요트투어를 즐기는 젊은이들의 모습이다. 한강 놀이문화의 발달로 요트투어는 누구나 쉽게 즐길 수 있는 관광 상품이 되었다.

This portrays the sight of young people enjoying a Han River yacht tour. With the development of recreational culture along the Han River, yacht tours have become a readily accessible tourism product that anyone can enjoy.

D. <단오풍정>(端午風情)

Women on the Dano Day

음력 5월 5일, 여름을 맞이하는 초하인 단옷날 깊은 계곡에서 그네타기와 반라로 멱 감기를 즐기는 여인네들과 바위 뒤로 훔쳐보는 동자승들의 풍경이다.

On the lunar calendar's May 5th, a day called "Dano," women are seen enjoying swinging on swings and taking baths with their upper bodies exposed in a deep valley, celebrating the arrival of summer. Meanwhile, behind the rocks, young men steal glances at the scene.

A Staycation at a Luxury Hotel with Namsan View

남산 뷰가 있는 서울의 5성급 호텔의 노천탕과 수영장에서 여가를 즐기는 젊은이들의 호캉스 풍경이다. 원작의 그네 뛰는 여성을 비키니 입은 여성으로 바꾸었다.

This depicts the scenery of young people enjoying a vacation at a 5-star hotel in Seoul with an outdoor hot spring bath and a swimming pool overlooking the Namsan view. In this adaptation, the original scene of a woman on a swing has been changed to a woman in bikinis.

E. <계변가화>(溪邊佳話)

Women by the Crystal Stream

남성과 여성이 접촉할 수 있던 유일한 공간 중 하나인 빨래터에서 활을 든 젊은 무반이자 한량이 지나가다 멈춰 서서 가슴을 내놓고 머리를 매만지는 젊은 여성을 바라본다. 노파의 표정이 언짢다.

In one of the few spaces where men and women could interact, the laundry area, a young and skilled archer, also a wanderer, passes by. He gazes at a young woman who has bared her chest and is touching her hair. The expression on the old woman's face appears displeased.

24-Hour Laundromat

현대 혼족 들이 많아지며 주거지역에 24시간 셀프 빨래방은 필수가 되었는데 이는 MZ 세대의 놀이터이자 멀티샵 화 되며 계속해서 발전하고 있다. 작품에서는 빨래를 기다리며 랩탑을 하거나 모바일 폰을 보고 있는 젊은 여성들을 빨래를 마치고 나가려던 남성이 고개를 돌려 바라보고 있다. 연륜이 있는 동네 주민 여성은 이를 언짢게 보고 있다.

As the number of single-person households increases in the modern era, 24-hour self-service laundromats have become essential in residential areas, evolving into playgrounds for the MZ generation and transforming into multi-purpose spaces. In the artwork, young women are seen waiting for their laundry while working on laptops or using mobile phones. A man, ready to leave after finishing his laundry, turns his head to look at them. An elderly person looks at this scene with displeasure.

F. <노상탁발>(路上托鉢)

Collecting Alms on the Road

조선 시대 억불정책에 따른 절 살림의 몰락으로거사와 남사당 무리들이 법고를 치며 탁발을 하고 있다. 한 무리의 여인들이 그 곳을 지나가며 한 여인이 시주를 하려 치마를 들춰 올리자 지나가던 양반은 차면선(遮面扇)도 내리고 여인네 쪽을 바라보고 있다.

During the Joseon Dynasty, due to the decline in the financial support of temples caused by the oppressive taxation policies, monks are seen beating drums and reciting scriptures. As they do so, a group of women passes by, and among them, one woman lifts her skirt to perform a ritual gesture. A passing yangban, upon seeing this, lowers his face cover and gazes towards the women.

Street Busking

‘버스킹’이 반드시 모금활동을 위한 것은 아니지만 공연을 하고 싶은 사람들에게 ‘길’은 무대가 되곤 한다. 이러한 버스킹이 사람들이 많은 곳에서 법고를 치는 거사들과 닮아있다.

"Busking" is not necessarily always intended for fundraising purposes, but the "street" often becomes a stage for those who want to perform.

G. <홍루대주>(紅樓待酒)

A Time of Waiting at the Courtesan's

여름의 대낮에 기생을 불러다 놓고 한량들이 술을 기다리고 있다. 기생 옆 상투 튼 남자가 집주인으로 보이며 술을 가져오는 나이든 여인이 벌거벗은 여아와 함께 외부에서 술을 가져오고 있다. 현재 영업하지 않는 기루로 추정된다.

In the midday of summer, one courtesan is summoned and three young men await with alcohol. An older woman, who appears to be bringing alcohol from outside, is accompanied by a young girl who is unclothed. The establishment is currently believed to be closed.

Pandemic Daytime Gathering for Drinks

그림에서는 저녁 장사로 대목을 잡던 고기 집에서 6시 이후 2명 이상 모임이 제한되어 낮술 영업을 하고 있다. 대낮에 회식을 하는 네 사람을 위해 종업원과 로봇이 서빙을 하고 있다.

In a pandemic-stricken barbecue restaurant, daytime drinking operations are underway. Staff and robots are serving office workers who are enjoying drinks and gatherings during daylight hours.

H. <야금모행>(夜禁冒行)

A Street Scene after the Curfew

도심의 한겨울 그믐달이 뜬 야간 통금시간에 양반과 기생이 몸종 아이와 함께 어디론가 향하는 길이다. 기생의 기부(妓夫)로 보이는 별감과 양반이 대화하는 듯 한데 체면을 구기며 갓태를 숙인 양반에게 별감은 무언가 지시하고 있다.

On a winter nighttime under the dark moon, a nobleman and a courtesan accompanied by a young servant are seen heading somewhere. The manager of the courtesan seems to be giving instructions to the nobleman.

Pandemic Nighttime Bar Alley

코로나19의 유흥가 집단 감염으로 마스크 필수 착용이 권고되던 때의 밤의 유흥가에서 마스크를 벗고 지나가는 남녀에게 경찰이 마스크를 쓰라고 지시하는 광경이다. 지나가던 아이는 한심한 듯 쳐다 보고 있다.

Amidst the nightlife in the era when wearing masks was recommended due to group infections of COVID-19 in entertainment venues, police officers are seen instructing a man and a woman passing by to wear masks. A passing child looks on with a sense of pity.

I. <청루소일>(靑樓消日)

An Idle Day at the Courtesan's

대낮의 한가한 기방풍경이다. 오입쟁이와 생황을든 기생이 기방에 앉아있고 전모 밑 가리마를 쓴의녀 기생이 몸종아이와 함께 들어오고 있다.

It's a peaceful daytime scene in a private room. A courtesan with musical instruments and a guest are sitting in the room, while a nurse-like courtesan wearing a bamboo hat is entering with a young servant.

Woman Returning Home After Plastic Surgery

성형수술을 마치고 얼굴에 붕대를 감고 큰 챙의모자를 쓰고 집안으로 들어온 딸을 보고 놀라는 부모님과 반려견의 모습이다.

It shows the expressions of surprise on the faces of the father, mother, and pet dog as they see their daughter coming into the house with her face wrapped in bandages after undergoing plastic surgery, wearing a wide-brimmed hat.

J. <춘색만원> (春色滿園)

Curiosity in the Early Spring

봄날, 낮부터 술을 한 잔 걸친 듯 얼굴이 벌게진 무관의 벼슬아치가 나물 캐러 들로 나온 여인의 바구니를 잡아끌며 무언가 신호를 보내고 있다. 그림 안에 붉은 꽃은 없는데 화제의 ‘붉은 꽃’이 의미하는 바는 남자의 얼굴을 가리킬 수도 둘의 춘정을 일컬을 수도 있다.

On a spring day, his face appearing somewhat flushed as if he had been drinking since noon, a nobleman grabs and pulls a woman's basket, sending some kind of signal. Though there are no red flowers within the painting, the symbolic 'Red Flower' could imply either covering the man's face or referencing the springtime affection between the two.

Lovers Beneath the Cherry Blossoms

국내에서 가장 높은 롯데타워가 우뚝 솟아있는 석촌호수를 배경으로 벚꽃이 흐드러진 봄날 데이트하는 남녀의 모습이다. 남자의 한손에는 차키가 들려 있고 여자의 열린 가방에 또 다른 손을 데며 여자와 눈을 맞추고 있다.

The scene depicts a couple on a springtime date by Seokchon Lake, with the towering Lotte Tower in the background and cherry blossoms falling all around. The man holds a car key in one hand, while his other hand rests inside the open bag of the woman. Their eyes meet as they share a moment together.

K. <월야밀회>(月夜密會)

Courtship under the Full Moon ⬆︎

보름달이 뜬 통행금지의 시간에 장교/포교로 보이는 남자와 남편에 자식까지 있는 여자가 얼굴을 붙이고 은밀한 포즈를 취하고 있다. 꺾어진 담벼락에서 이를 보고 있는 여성은 몸을 벽 쪽으로 바짝 붙여 들키지 않으려는 듯하다.

During the restricted hours when the full moon is up, a man who appears to be an officer and a married woman are seen pressing their faces close together, assuming a secretive pose. A woman observing them from behind a broken wall seems to press herself against the wall, as if trying not to be noticed.

보름달이 뜬 달밤 강남의 유흥가에서 한 남녀가끌어안고 있는 장면을 전봇대 아래서 바람피우는남편의 현장을 목격한 한 여인이 몸을 숨기고 바라 보고 있다.

L. <소년전홍>(少年剪紅)

⬆︎ Courtship in the Blooming Garden

붉은 꽃이 핀 봄날, 기이한 괴석이 있는 양반집 후원에서 갓 장가든 양반가의 젊은 서방이 몸종의손목을 잡아끌며 꾀는 모양이다. 엉덩이를 쑥 뺀몸종은 싫은 건지 내숭인지 알 수 없지만 곤란해하는 듯 하고 있다.

On a spring day with red flowers in bloom, in the backyard of a nobleman's house with peculiar rocks, a young nobleman is seen grabbing the wrist of a maid and seducing her. The maid, whose buttocks are exposed, appears to be in an awkward situation.

Man Pulling the Woman's Wrist

황사와 코로나로 마스크를 착용해야하는 봄날, 한 남녀가 코엑스의 강남스타일 조형물 앞에서 손목을 잡아끌며 실랑이를 벌이고 있다. 조선 후기와 다르게 여성은 싫다는 의사표현을 하는 듯 보이고 남성은 무언가 애걸복걸 하는 듯하다. 손목을 포갠 조형물이 상징적이다.

On a spring day when masks are required due to yellow dust and COVID-19, a man and a woman are in front of the Gangnam Style sculpture at COEX. The man is grabbing the woman's wrist and engaging in a heated argument. Unlike the late Joseon period, the woman appears to be expressing her disapproval, while the man seems to be pleading or making excuses. The sculpture with clasped wrists holds symbolic significance.

M. <쌍륙삼매>(雙六三昧)

Dicers among the Hills

산자락에서 유생과 벼슬을 하지 않은 남자가 기생들을 데리고 나와 쌍륙(雙六)을 즐기고 있다. 조선 후기는 도박이 사회문제가 될 정도로 성행했는데 쌍륙은 투전, 골패에 비해 상대적으로 도박성이 약하며 서양의 체스와도 같다.

On a mountainside, two men are seen coming out with two courtesans and enjoying a game of Ssangryuk (Korean board game) together. In the late Joseon period, gambling became a significant social issue, and Ssangryuk, similar to the Western game of chess, gained popularity.

카지노에서 게임에 열중한 사람들과 주변에서 구경하는 사람들의 모습이다.

This portrays the scene of people engrossed in games at a casino, with bystanders observing the surroundings.

N. <무녀신무>(巫女神舞)

A Priestess in Seance

조선 시대에는 억불정책으로 굿을 하는 것은 표면적으로 금지되었으나 왕실뿐만 아니라 서민들 사이에서도 공공연히 행해졌다. 그림에서는 홍철릭을 입은 무당이 춤을 추고 있고, 악공들과 제물로 보아 작은 규모의 굿을 여인들이 하고 있는 장면이다.

In the Joseon Dynasty, engaging in shamanistic rituals and ceremonies, known as "gut," was officially prohibited on the surface due to Confucian policies. However, these practices were openly conducted not only within the royal family but also among commoners. In the depicted scene, women are shown organizing and participating in a small-scale ritual, reflecting the continued practice of such ceremonies despite the restrictions.

Online Shamanistic Rituals During the Pandemic

코로나에 집안에서 조차 마스크를 쓴 중년여성들이 노트북에 모니터를 연결하여 작은 소반에 밥그릇까지 올려놓고 굿을 하고 있다. 갑자기 들어온 남자와 아이가 놀라 바라본다.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, middle-aged women wearing masks even indoors are seen connecting a laptop to a monitor, placing a small table with food dishes, and conducting a shamanistic ritual. Suddenly, a man and a child enter the scene, surprised and watching in astonishment.

O. <임하투호>(林下投壺)

A Game of Throwing Arrows

여름에 즐기는 투호놀이는 두 편으로 나누어 어깨가 아닌 팔만 이용해 가운데 놓인 병에 열두 개의 화살을 길이의 두 배 이상 되는 거리에서 던져 승부를 가르는 집중력을 요하는 놀이이다. 그림에서는 네 명의 사내가 한명의 기생과 함께 게임을 즐기고 있다.

The summer game of Tuho is divided into two teams, where players use their arms instead of shoulders to throw twelve arrows into a vase placed in the center from a distance more than twice the length. It's a game that requires concentration and precision to determine the winner. In the picture, four men are enjoying the game with one courtesan.

Golf Enjoyed by the Younger Generation

팬데믹에 골프가 크게 유행하면서 개성 있는 복장으로 골프를 즐기는 MZ세대들이 많아졌다. 그림에서 젊은이들은 자유분방한 골프복을 입고 필드에서 게임을 즐기고 있다.

Amid the pandemic, golf has gained significant popularity, leading to an increase in young people enjoying the sport with unique and distinctive attire. The picture depicts this phenomenon.
